BAYTOWN OVERVIEW
_______________
ABOUT US
Founded in 1919, ExxonMobil’s Baytown Refinery began operation in 1920 and the Chemical Plant started up in 1940. Eventually, we commenced operations on our Olefins Plant in 1979, as well as our Plastics Plant in Mont Belvieu, Texas, in 1982.
Our Baytown area operations are located on approximately 3,400 acres along the Houston Ship Channel, about 25 miles east of Houston. It is comprised of four manufacturing sites and a global technology center. Employing a workforce of approximately 7,000, the Baytown area sites are highly integrated, which enhances both the efficiency and competitiveness of our facilities. We are developing technologies to make cleaner fuels and are working together to operate more safely and reliably.

BAYTOWN REFINERY
The Baytown Refinery is the fifth largest refinery in the United States, with a crude oil capacity of 588,000 barrels per day. The Baytown Refinery is a maximum conversion refinery and has the flexibility to process heavy, high-sulfur and high-metal crudes into a full range of petroleum products, including LPG, motor gasoline, jet and diesel fuels and carbon coke. It is also one of the largest lube basestock plants in the world and produces products such as lube oils, waxes, fluids and specialties in various blends and grades. The Baytown Refinery is fully integrated with the Chemical and Olefins plants and is a major source of petrochemical feedstocks for these plants.
BAYTOWN CHEMICAL PLANT
The Baytown Chemical Plan (BTCP) has the capacity to produce more than nine billion pounds of petrochemical products each year, supporting six ExxonMobil Chemical Company business lines. Aromatics train produces paraxylene, benzene and heavy aromatic fluids for use in applications such as polyester fabrics, food packaging and agricultural chemicals. The olefins units produce propylene, syngas and C4-C5 olefins products, which are consumed within BTCP, by other ExxonMobil plants and by third parties.
Propylene is converted to high-performance polypropylene products, which are used in diverse products such as auto battery cases, auto interior and trim components, carpet fibers, molded goods, packaging, appliance parts and diapers/hygiene. The butyl polymers section converts olefins into butyl rubber, bromobutyl and Exxpro™ products, which go into tire inner tubes, other tire components, pharmaceutical and other end uses. The Synthetics section produces metallocene polyalphaolefins for use in finished industrial, automotive and gear oil applications. The Solution Polymers Unit (SPU) produces Vistamaxx™ performance polymers and Exact ™ plastomers. These innovative products add flexibility and toughness when blended with other plastics. The Linear Alpha-olefins Unit (LAU) produces Elevexx ™ intermediate fluids and waxes used as feedstock in a wide range of other processes.
BAYTOWN OLEFINS PLANT
The Baytown Olefins Plant is located on a 370-acre tract adjacent to the Baytown Refinery and Chemical Plant. The plant produces 10 billion pounds of the world’s most widely used primary petrochemicals — ethylene, propylene and butadiene — and is feedstock flexible. It is one of the largest ethylene plants in the world. Baytown Olefins Plant also houses most of the cogeneration facilities that produce all of the power and steam required to operate the ExxonMobil Baytown complex. Total cogeneration capacity is approximately 550 megawatts.
MONT BELVIEU PLASTICS PLANT
The Mont Belvieu Plastics Plant is located on 500 acres in Chambers County, northeast of the Baytown Complex, and specializes in the production of polyethylene. The Plastics Plant utilizes the latest technology in processing and catalysis to produce linear low density and high density polyethylene products for use in film applications including food packaging, liquid packaging, heavy duty sacks, stretch and shrink films for bundling, hygiene films, trash bags, industrial liners, agricultural films, grocery bags, can liners, pipe and various blowmolded rigid containers.
BAYTOWN TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING COMPLEX
The Baytown Technology & Engineering Complex (BTEC) is one of ExxonMobil’s largest global technology centers, located within the greater ExxonMobil Baytown Complex. The site encompasses two major facilities – referred to as BTEC-East and BTEC-West – with more than 740,000 square feet of space for offices, laboratories and pilot plant operations. BTEC-East houses employees who provide research and development, and technical support to the company’s global Olefins Aromatics, Intermediates, Synthetics, Catalyst and Licensing business groups. BTEC-West serves as the major research and development facility for ExxonMobil Chemical’s worldwide Polymers business, with a focus on polyolefins and elastomers products, and catalysis research for the plastics industry. BTEC also houses the technical capabilities needed to support the development of sustainable solutions, from advanced recycling of plastic waste to novel technologies for ExxonMobil’s Low Carbon Solutions business.
ADVANCED RECYCLING
_______________
Advanced recycling in Baytown, Texas, uses proprietary technology to break down hard-to-recycle plastics and transform them into raw materials for new products. It is capable of processing more than 80 million pounds of plastic waste per year, supporting a circular economy for post-use plastics and helping divert plastic waste currently sent to landfills.
Beyond Baytown, ExxonMobil expects to expand annual advanced recycling capacity to 500,000 metric tons (1 billion pounds) by year-end 2026 across multiple sites globally.
