Column: Why carbon capture and storage is a win for Jefferson Co.

As our energy and manufacturing industries evolve to meet new global sustainability goals and rising long-term production demand, carbon capture and storage is one of the best technologies available to meet both objectives. The Golden Triangle is already seeing meaningful investments in CCS come to our region, so it is important for our community to understand how this technology works, why it is safe to have in our area and the numerous benefits that will come as a result.

While investments in CCS have skyrocketed recently, CCS technology has actually been in use around the world for more than half a century. One major advantage of CCS is that it can reduce emissions from existing oil and gas infrastructure, which is the main economic driver for southeast Texas and provides about 40% of Texas’ energy needs, allowing our state to continue being a top energy producer and bolstering a resilient electrical grid in the most responsible way possible.

As a research scientist and Chair of Lamar University’s Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, with a focus on safely and effectively operating pipelines, I’ve studied the science behind technologies like CCS for more than two decades — specifically, how to make technologies like CCS the safest emissions reduction technology available.”
