ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery earns third consecutive ENERGY STAR Certification

The ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery was one of only less than 20 refineries in the country to earn the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2023 ENERGY STAR Certification for its excellence in energy efficiency.

This marks the site’s third consecutive ENERGY STAR Certification.

“Our Beaumont Refinery team is proud to accept the EPA’s ENERGY STAR certification for the third consecutive year,” said Mike Mustian, Beaumont Complex Manager. “This recognition embodies our continued commitment to safe, reliable, sustainable and efficient operations.”

The ExxonMobil Beaumont Refinery’s energy performance in 2022 earned a first quartile rating in the industry benchmarking standard, the Solomon Associates Energy Intensity Index scoring system, which assesses petroleum refineries’ energy performance. The refinery’s most recent rating has translated into fewer greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to taking 28,000 cars off the road, or the reduction of nearly 129,000 tons of carbon dioxide.

The refinery’s consistent efforts toward improving energy efficiency has resulted in the removal equal to a total of 166,000 cars from the road – a reduction of nearly 764,000 tons of carbon dioxide since 2019.

“These ENERGY STAR certified plants demonstrate that cutting the embodied carbon of our industrial products through energy efficiency doesn’t just make environmental sense, it makes economic sense,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan.

The industrial sector accounts for just under one third of U.S. greenhouse emissions, stemming primarily from energy use in manufacturing plants, according to the EPA.

However, energy improvement projects and management practices, such as those employed at the Beaumont Refinery, make the difference and lead the way in industry energy efficiency, which is why this recognition is reserved for plants in the top 25% of energy efficiency in their sector.
